PDF Dark Mode on Windows: Read Without the Glare

March 17, 2026

Windows 10 and 11 have a system-wide dark mode, but it does not change the content of PDF files. When you open a PDF in Edge, Chrome, or Adobe Acrobat, the pages still appear with their original bright white background. If you read a lot of PDFs, especially at night, here is how to actually get dark mode.

The simple approach: convert in your browser

Open the PDF Dark Mode Converter in any browser on Windows. Drop your PDF onto the page, choose a theme, and the converted dark-mode PDF downloads automatically. No software to install, no account to create.

The tool includes 16+ themes (Dracula, Nord, Solarized, Tokyo Night, and more) plus a custom color picker if you want a specific shade. You can also adjust the resolution and output quality.

What about Adobe Acrobat's dark mode?

Adobe Acrobat Reader has a "Dark Mode" appearance setting, but it only changes the application chrome (menus, toolbars, sidebars). The PDF pages themselves stay white. There is also an accessibility option to override page colors, but it only works as a temporary display change. If you share the file or open it elsewhere, it reverts to the original colors.

If you need the dark background to be permanent and portable, converting the PDF is the way to go.

What about Microsoft Edge?

Edge has a "Force Dark Mode for Web Contents" flag (similar to Chrome), but it does not reliably apply to PDFs opened in Edge's built-in viewer. Some pages may darken partially while others remain unchanged. It is not a consistent solution for PDF reading.

Chrome and Firefox have similar limitations with their PDF viewers. See our guides for Chrome dark mode, Firefox dark mode, or Edge-specific options for more details.

Why converting works better on Windows

Get started: Open the PDF Dark Mode Converter, pick a theme, and convert your PDF right now. Works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or any browser on Windows.
